What It Takes To Be A Good Paramedic

With more and more hospitals coming up in Metros, the demand for good paramedics is skyrocketing. If you too are planning to dive in to this profession, make certain that you own all the qualities which are a prerequisite for this profession. Not only should you be extremely careful about the kind of course that you chose, the academy from where you get trained, licenses etc., keep in mind that you must develop some personal qualities that make a paramedic, a good paramedic! Let us see what all you must inculcate to be a notable paramedic.
  1. Compassion: Yes!! Love and compassion is all we need to walk through any remorse, any difficulty in life. By being compassionate and empathetic, you can bring a million dollar smile to a patient who is in the hardest of medical conditions. You should be able to feel for the plight of the others and give your maximum in trying to eliminate the pain.

  2. Concern: Off course, if you will just continue about your business and will not get budged by anyone in trouble, you are likely to be labeled as a callous and an unreasonably professional person. You are in a service where you have to keep your “me and I” way behind.

  3. Patience:  As the quote says, “A handful of patience is worth more than a bushel of brains”,  a little more patience can go a long way in ensuring that you are attending to a patient without any hurry and, completely.

  4. Intelligence: No doubt you are a well qualified paramedic with a lot of training hours behind you but, you will be facing situations where your sense of occasion, sense of timing, emergency skills will be tested again and again. You might also have to use your natural instincts so trust your guts!

  5. Respectful: When you are tending to a patient, be respectful as they might be extremely vulnerable. With care and compassion, show respect as it builds a lot of confidence in a patient. Also, he is likely to trust you more and with this half the battle is won!

  6. Humble: When a person is suffering from an excruciatingly high pain, he might lose control over his sagacity and target you out of agony. Try to be humble and by all means, do not retaliate. Don’t try to avenge anyone and just keep one thing in mind that you are the one who can handle this situation very wisely.

  7. Stability: God forbid, you will be coming face to face with a lot of trauma, blood and even death. During these weak moments, you have to maintain a cool demeanor and keep your physical, mental and emotional reflexes in control. Don’t let the stress play with the strength of your character.
Apart from the above stated qualities, one should also be honest, dutiful, vigilant and selfless. If you already possess such qualities then you will surely go places in your profession and if not, then start imbibing them from today as nothing is impossible.
