Career in Medical Laboratory Technology

Medical Laboratory Technology, also termed as Clinical Laboratory Technology is a field dealing in the assessment, prevention and treatment of diseases, with the help of laboratory tests. All the major hospitals, clinics and nursing homes should have well equipped labs. Now, even the government and private labs are mushrooming thereby necessitating the need for highly skilled Medical Laboratory Technicians.

A Medical Laboratory Technician can have a diverse expertise and profiles which could be in a blood bank, immunology, clinical or chemical analysis of body fluids, hematology which is blood related and microbiology which involves the study of various microorganisms.

Eligibility

The academies offer a two/three year diploma course in MLT. For the two year course, a candidate should have cleared 10+2 from a recognized university. Similarly, for a three year course, 10th class examination from a recognized University or Board is a must.

Personal Traits

Apart from the professional skills quoted above, one must possess or develop some personal attributes as well. The technician must have an eye for detail, an ability to work under pressure for long hours. He/she must be sincere, should work with utmost levels of precision and must have a methodical bent of mind. Further, patience, passion and commitment towards the job are a prerequisite too.

Job Prospects

A trained medical laboratory technician may find a competent career in a multispecialty hospital, emergency centers, private laboratory or pathological labs, blood donor centers, doctor’s office, nursing homes etc.

Job opportunities can also be explored in the research laboratories and defense services.
